The Role

What a Support Worker does at GenCare

As a GenCare Support Worker, you'll work with NDIS participants to help them achieve their goals and live independently. This means:

You're not just following a checklist — you're building relationships, understanding each participant's unique situation, and helping them develop the confidence and skills to do more for themselves. You'll work directly with participants in their homes and communities, and you'll be part of a care team that genuinely cares about outcomes.

This is hands-on work that requires patience, cultural sensitivity, and a real commitment to putting the participant first.

Day in the Life

What a typical shift looks like

8:30am: You arrive at Sarah's house. She's been a participant with GenCare for 8 months. Today is a day where you're helping her with personal care and preparing breakfast. You chat while you work — she mentions she wants to try volunteering at the local community centre.

10:00am: You help her shower and get ready. She has some anxiety about a doctor's appointment this afternoon, so you listen, reassure, and help her prepare what she wants to ask the doctor.

1:00pm: You support her to the doctor's appointment, help her communicate her concerns, and take notes. You're her advocate and her support.

3:00pm: Back at home, you help with light meal prep and chat about the volunteering idea. You make a note to mention it to her coordinator at the next meeting.

5:00pm: You handover to the evening support worker, update the notes in the system, and head home knowing you made Sarah's day a bit easier, safer, and more connected.

That's the job. It's sometimes physical, often emotional, always meaningful. And for the right person — someone who genuinely wants to help — it's deeply rewarding.
