For Families & Carers
Equipment that makes caring safer.

The right AT reduces the physical demands on carers — hoists, transfer aids, bathing equipment, communication devices. GenCare AT assessments consider the needs of your whole household, not just the participant.

For Support Coordinators
AT assessments that get funded.

GenCare AT assessments are written to NDIS AT funding requirements — the right evidence, the right risk class justification, the right quotes. Our OTs know what the NDIS needs to approve AT funding and write assessments accordingly.

What we do

AT assessment and support across all categories

Most requested
Mobility & Wheeled AT

Manual and powered wheelchairs, scooters, walking frames, standing aids and postural support equipment — assessed, prescribed and funded through your NDIS plan.

Daily Living Equipment

Kitchen aids, dressing aids, bathing equipment, continence products, bed rails and other low-risk equipment to support independence with daily tasks at home.

Communication Devices (AAC)

Speech generating devices, communication apps and eye-gaze technology — assessed by a speech pathologist and OT, prescribed and funded through Assistive Technology.

Pressure Care & Seating

Specialised seating and pressure care assessment and prescription for participants at risk of pressure injuries — including custom wheelchairs, cushions and positioning systems.

Vehicle Modifications

Assessment and prescription for vehicle modifications to support participants in driving or being transported safely — funded under NDIS AT where the modification is disability-related.

Home Technology & Smart Aids

Environmental control systems, smart home technology, electronic aids for daily living and remote monitoring solutions that increase independence within the home environment.

For Families & Carers

The right AT reduces carer load — significantly.

The physical demands of caring without the right equipment cause serious injury to carers every year. Hoists, transfer aids, shower chairs, ramps — the right AT makes caring physically sustainable. GenCare AT assessments look at the whole household environment, including what would make caring safer and more manageable for the people doing it. Equipment that helps the participant also protects the family.

For Participants

Get the equipment that actually fits your life.

Too much AT sits unused because it was never properly assessed or fitted to the individual. GenCare OTs trial equipment with participants before prescribing it — so you know it works for you before the NDIS funds it. We also train you and your support workers to use it correctly, and we are available when questions come up after delivery.

Getting started

AT assessment to approval in 4 steps

01
AT assessment referral

We accept referrals from Support Coordinators, families and participants. Tell us the AT type needed and the participant's functional goals — we match an OT within 1 business day.

02
Functional AT assessment

Your OT conducts a thorough assessment of your functional needs, trialling equipment options where available, to identify the most appropriate AT solution.

03
AT report and quotes

Your OT prepares an AT assessment report and NDIS quotes — written to the standards required for NDIS AT funding approval at the appropriate risk class.

04
Equipment supply and training

Once AT is approved, GenCare can support equipment procurement and provides training to ensure the participant — and their support team — can use the equipment safely and effectively.

Why GenCare

AT assessments that get approved

AT assessment reports that do not meet NDIS standards result in rejected funding requests and delayed equipment — frustrating for everyone. GenCare AT assessments are written by OTs who understand the NDIS AT funding framework and know what evidence the NDIS needs at each risk class. We do not write generic reports — we write reports that are approved.

Assistive Technology — Powered Wheelchair

We had tried twice with other providers to get a powered wheelchair funded and both reports were rejected by the NDIS. GenCare's OT took the time to do a thorough assessment, trialled three different chairs and wrote a report that addressed every single NDIS requirement. The funding was approved on the first submission. My son has been using the chair for six months now and it has transformed his independence.

FAQs

Assistive technology questions answered

Covering AT funding, risk classes, assessments and the approval process.

NDIS Assistive Technology (AT) is equipment, devices or software that helps participants with their disability — increasing independence, reducing the need for human support or making daily tasks possible. AT is funded under the Capital Supports category of an NDIS plan and ranges from simple daily living aids (Low Risk, Class 1) to complex custom equipment (High Risk, Class 4) like powered wheelchairs or communication devices.
The NDIS classifies AT into four risk classes. Class 1 (Low Risk) items like shower chairs can be purchased without an assessment. Class 2 (Low-Medium Risk) items need a recommendation. Class 3 (Medium-High Risk) items like wheelchairs need an AT Assessment from a registered practitioner. Class 4 (High Risk) items like complex seating and communication devices require a detailed AT Assessment Report and NDIS approval.
For Class 3 and Class 4 AT, yes — an occupational therapist or other registered AT assessor must conduct a functional assessment and provide a written AT Assessment Report. GenCare OTs conduct AT assessments for all risk classes and write reports to NDIS funding standards.
An AT assessment involves your OT reviewing your functional needs, trialling equipment options where possible, identifying the most appropriate solution and writing a report that justifies the AT recommendation with clinical evidence. The report is then submitted with the NDIS quote to support an AT funding request in your plan.
AT is funded under the Capital Supports category of your NDIS plan. Low-cost AT (under the NDIS AT Low Cost threshold) can typically be claimed from your Core Supports budget. Higher-cost AT requires specific funding in your Capital Supports budget — which may need to be requested at your plan review with supporting AT assessment evidence.
Yes. If you need AT that is not currently funded in your NDIS plan, GenCare can conduct an AT assessment that provides the evidence needed to request AT funding at your next plan review. We can also support urgent AT requests through the NDIS's mid-plan funding process where appropriate.
Yes. Equipment training is an essential part of every AT supply. GenCare provides hands-on training for participants and their support workers on how to use new AT safely and effectively — including hoists, wheelchairs, communication devices and home technology systems.
GenCare AT assessments are available across Melbourne, Sydney and selected regional areas. Telehealth assessment support is available for some AT categories. Call 1300-247-788 to confirm AT assessment availability in your area.
The assessment timeline depends on the complexity of the AT needed. A standard AT assessment and report typically takes 2–4 weeks from initial contact to report completion. Complex custom AT (like powered wheelchairs or AAC devices) may take longer due to trialling requirements and manufacturer lead times.
Support Coordinators can refer participants via our referral form at /make-a-referral or by calling 1300-247-788. Please include the AT type needed, the participant's functional goals and their location. We respond within 1 business day and match an appropriate OT assessor.
