Who home modifications are for

The right modifications for your home

For Families & Carers
A safer home for everyone.

Home modifications reduce the risk of falls and injuries for participants — and reduce the physical strain on carers. A well-designed bathroom with the right grab rails, a hoist track, a ramp at the front door — these changes protect the whole household.

What we do

Home modification services from assessment to completion

Most common
Bathroom & Toilet Modifications

Accessible shower conversions, grab rails, raised toilet seats, hoist ceiling tracks, non-slip flooring and bathroom layouts that support safe transfers and personal care.

Access & Entry Modifications

Ramps, handrails, widened doorways, threshold adjustments and entrance modifications that enable independent entry and exit from the home.

Kitchen Modifications

Height-adjustable benchtops, accessible storage, tap adaptations and kitchen layouts designed for participants who want to cook and prepare food independently.

Mobility & Hoist Infrastructure

Ceiling hoist systems, portable hoist installation, turning circles for powered wheelchairs and flooring changes to support safe indoor mobility.

Safety & Fall Prevention

Grab rails in bathrooms, hallways, bedrooms and stairways — correctly positioned by an OT to be actually useful, not just present.

External & Garden Access

Pathways, outdoor ramps, garden access modifications and driveway changes that support participants in accessing and enjoying the outside of their home.

For Families & Carers

Stop managing the risk. Modify the home.

Many families spend years managing risk in a home that simply was not designed for their family member's needs — supporting transfers without a hoist, dealing with a bathroom that cannot accommodate a wheelchair, worrying every time the front step is used. The right modification does not just protect the participant — it reduces the daily physical and mental load for everyone in the house. GenCare manages the whole process so you do not have to.

For Participants

Your home. Your independence. Your choice to stay.

Home modifications are one of the most powerful tools for staying where you want to be — your own home. Whether it is a grab rail that lets you shower independently, a ramp that means you can leave without help or a bathroom conversion that ends the risk of falls, the right modification changes your daily experience of independence. GenCare handles everything from the OT visit to the final inspection.

Our process

Assessment to completion in 4 steps

01
OT home assessment

A GenCare OT visits your home to assess your functional needs, identify the modifications required and review the physical environment for what is feasible.

02
NDIS report and quotes

Your OT writes a Home Modification Report to NDIS standards, with builder quotes included — providing all the documentation needed for NDIS funding approval.

03
NDIS approval

We submit the report and quotes to the NDIS (or assist your Support Coordinator to do so) and track the approval process on your behalf.

04
Builder liaison and completion

GenCare liaises with the builder throughout the modification — managing timelines, quality and ensuring the completed work matches the OT recommendation.

Why GenCare

Fully managed — OT to builder to handover

The home modification process is complicated — OT assessment, NDIS reporting, builder quotes, approval, scheduling and construction. Most families and coordinators do not want to manage all of that. GenCare handles every step, from the first OT visit to the final builder handover, keeping you informed without burdening you with the management.

Home Modifications — Bathroom Conversion

After Mum had her stroke, showering had become dangerous for everyone. GenCare sent an OT within a week, the report was submitted with the builder quotes and the bathroom was converted six weeks later. Mum can now shower independently with the grab rails and the accessible shower. She's stayed at home for two years now when we thought she would need to move much earlier. That modification was everything.

FAQs

Home modifications questions answered

Covering minor and major mods, NDIS funding, rental properties and the approval process.

NDIS Home Modifications are structural or installation changes made to a participant's home to improve safety, accessibility and independence. They are funded under the Capital Supports category of an NDIS plan. Minor modifications (under the NDIS threshold) can be claimed from Core Supports, while major modifications require specific Capital Supports funding.
Minor home modifications are low-cost changes that do not require significant structural work — grab rails, shower chairs, portable ramps, lever tap handles. Major home modifications involve structural changes — bathroom conversions, widened doorways, ceiling hoist installation, ramp construction. Major modifications require an OT assessment report and NDIS Capital Supports funding.
For major home modifications, yes — an occupational therapist must assess your functional needs, recommend the specific modifications required and write a Home Modification Report that justifies the NDIS funding request. Minor modifications can often be claimed without a formal report, but OT guidance is still recommended to ensure the modifications are placed correctly.
Yes, but the process involves landlord consent. GenCare can assist with preparing the documentation for landlord approval and, in many cases, modifications can be designed to be reversible at the end of a tenancy. We have experience navigating the NDIS home modification process in rental properties and can advise on your specific situation.
The timeline from initial OT assessment to completed modification varies. A straightforward minor modification (grab rails) can be completed within a few weeks. A major modification (bathroom conversion, ceiling hoist) typically takes 8–16 weeks — including OT assessment, report writing, NDIS approval and builder scheduling. GenCare manages this process on your behalf.
Minor home modifications are funded under Core Supports (Assistance with Daily Life) up to the NDIS low-cost AT threshold. Major home modifications are funded under Capital Supports and require a specific budget line in your NDIS plan, supported by an OT Home Modification Report and builder quotes. If you do not currently have home modification funding, we can help you request it at your next plan review.
Yes. GenCare manages the full process — OT assessment, NDIS report, builder quotes and builder liaison throughout the modification. We work with approved NDIS builders and ensure the completed work matches the OT's recommendations exactly.
Hospital discharge home modifications are among our most common urgent requests. GenCare can prioritise OT assessment and report writing for participants transitioning home from hospital — and can work with the hospital social work team and Support Coordinator to fast-track the approval and builder timeline where possible. Call 1300-247-788 immediately for urgent discharge modifications.
Yes — in many cases, the right home modifications allow participants to remain living at home safely for much longer than would otherwise be possible. This is often the explicit goal of NDIS home modification funding. GenCare OTs are experienced in designing modifications that maximise independence and delay or avoid the need for more intensive supported accommodation.
Support Coordinators can refer participants via our referral form at /make-a-referral or by calling 1300-247-788. Please include the participant's address, the type of modifications you believe are needed and any urgent circumstances (e.g. hospital discharge). We respond within 1 business day and will arrange an OT home visit.
