What is SIL?

Supported Independent Living — explained simply

Supported Independent Living (SIL) is an NDIS support that funds qualified support workers to help you with daily tasks in your home — so you can live as independently as possible.

SIL is not just accommodation. It's 24/7 support with personal care, meals, medication, household tasks and community access — tailored to your goals and your routines.

SIL is for people who:
Need daily support to manage personal care and household tasks
Want to live independently but require regular assistance
Are transitioning from home, hospital or another placement
Would benefit from a stable, supported home environment
Are funded through the NDIS under Core Supports

Supported Independent Living (SIL) is an NDIS funding category that pays for support workers to assist you with daily tasks in your own home. This means you can live as independently as possible — in a shared or individual home — with qualified staff supporting you around the clock. SIL covers things like personal care, meal preparation, medication support, household tasks and community access.
SIL is available to NDIS participants who need daily support to live independently. Eligibility is determined by the NDIA based on your level of functional impairment and your support needs. Typically, participants with moderate to high support needs qualify. GenCare can help you understand whether SIL may be right for you and assist with the assessment and application process.
SIL is funded through your NDIS Core Supports budget under "Assistance with Daily Life." The NDIA approves SIL funding based on a formal SIL assessment — usually completed by a Support Coordinator and an occupational therapist. The funding covers the cost of your support workers, not the home itself (accommodation is covered separately through SDA or private rental arrangements).
To apply for SIL, you'll need a SIL assessment completed by a qualified professional (usually an OT), a letter of support from a SIL provider like GenCare, and documentation showing your support needs. Your Support Coordinator can guide the process. If you don't have a Support Coordinator, GenCare can help you understand your options and connect you with the right people.
A SIL assessment is a formal evaluation of your daily living support needs — usually conducted by an occupational therapist. It looks at how much support you need for everyday tasks like personal care, cooking, medication, household tasks and community access. The results are used to determine how many support hours you need and what type of SIL home is most appropriate.
GenCare offers shared SIL homes, high-support SIL homes, complex care homes, gender-specific homes where needed, and well-located homes near transport, shops and community services. We work to match each participant to the housing type that best fits their support needs, lifestyle and preferences.
Vacancies change regularly across our SIL homes. We support fast placements and can assist with urgent or upcoming move-ins. Contact us on 1300-247-788 or fill in our enquiry form and we will check what is currently available in your preferred area.
We take matching seriously. Before placing a participant, we consider their personality, interests, daily routines, support needs, housemate compatibility, location preferences and cultural background. Our goal is a stable, long-term home — not just filling a vacancy. You will always be introduced to potential housemates and your support team before any commitment is made.
Yes — consistency is a priority for us. We assign a core team of support workers to each participant and aim to keep those workers consistent over time. This builds trust, improves outcomes and makes daily life more comfortable and predictable. Worker changes are communicated in advance wherever possible.
Absolutely. We encourage and welcome family involvement at every stage — from the initial consultation through to ongoing reviews. We keep families and Support Coordinators regularly updated and involved. You will always know how your loved one is going.
