NDIS Short-Term Accommodation explained

What is NDIS Short-Term Accommodation?

Short-Term Accommodation (STA) is a National Disability Insurance Scheme Core Support that funds short stays — typically 1 to 14 nights — in a supported home away from your usual environment. It covers the accommodation itself and the 24/7 support staff who make the stay work.

STA is the NDIS's formal term for what many people call disability respite accommodation. It benefits both participants — who get a positive break with activities and social connection — and the families and carers who need genuine time to rest.

Not clinical — a real break

What a GenCare STA stay looks like

Every stay is designed to be a positive, enjoyable experience — not a bed to wait in until you go home.

Outings & community activities

Day trips, cafes, shopping, parks and local events — STA is designed to get participants out into the community, not just stay indoors.

Social connection

Opportunities to meet others, build friendships and feel part of a group — participants often leave STA having made real social connections.

Safe, home-like environment

Comfortable furnished homes, not institutions — participants feel settled and at ease from the moment they arrive.

Independence skill-building

Every stay is an opportunity to practise daily living skills, try new things and grow in confidence — progress that carries through to everyday life.

Fun & enjoyment

Movies, games, cooking, craft, sport — activities chosen around each participant's interests, because a good time is part of the point.

24/7 qualified support overnight

Trained support staff are on-site through every hour of every stay — participants and families can rest easy knowing qualified care is always present.

For Families & Carers

You need rest too — and you deserve it

Caring for someone with disability is a full-time commitment. STA gives families and carers a genuine break — time to sleep, work, travel or simply breathe — while your loved one is cared for by qualified staff around the clock.

Short-Term Accommodation

We were terrified to leave our son for a whole weekend. By Friday night he was calling us to say how much fun he was having. The staff knew exactly how to support him — and honestly? That was the first proper sleep my wife and I had in months.

Common questions

NDIS STA explained

Everything you need to know about Short-Term Accommodation, NDIS respite care and how to access it — answered simply.

Short-Term Accommodation (STA) is an NDIS-funded support under Core Supports (Assistance with Daily Life). It provides short disability accommodation — typically 1 to 14 nights — where participants can stay in a supported home away from their usual environment. STA under the National Disability Insurance Scheme covers accommodation, meals, personal care and 24/7 support staff.
STA is the NDIS's version of respite care. It funds a supported short stay that benefits both the participant (independence, activities, social connection) and the carer (genuine time to rest). The National Disability Insurance Scheme uses the term STA rather than "respite" in plans, so check your Core Supports budget if you're looking for NDIS respite providers.
The NDIS funds up to 28 days of STA per year by default, with each individual stay typically capped at 14 nights. Extended stays or additional days can be requested from the NDIA where there is a clear reason — for example, an emergency or a carer health situation. STA can be used in a single block or spread across the year as multiple shorter stays.
Yes. Emergency respite accommodation is one of the most important uses of STA. Where a carer becomes unwell, is hospitalised, or a participant's living situation breaks down, STA can be arranged at short notice. GenCare prioritises urgent respite bookings and responds to emergency requests the same day. Call 1300-247-788 immediately if you need urgent support.
Absolutely — and this is one of the most valuable uses of Short-Term Accommodation. A trial STA stay lets participants experience supported living in a real home environment, meet potential housemates, test daily routines and build confidence before committing to a Supported Independent Living placement. Many participants find STA removes the anxiety from the SIL transition.
Yes. STA is available for both children and adults with disability under the National Disability Insurance Scheme. For participants under 18, GenCare works closely with families to ensure the stay environment is age-appropriate, safe and fully staffed with experienced workers who hold the relevant NDIS Worker Screening clearances.
GenCare's Short-Term Accommodation includes: fully furnished accommodation, all meals, personal care and daily living support, 24/7 qualified support staff including overnight, community outings and activities, medication management where required, and transition support if needed. STA is not a bare room — it is a complete supported experience.
STA funding appears under Core Supports → Assistance with Daily Life in your NDIS plan. Some plans include a specific STA line item; others have a flexible Core Supports budget that can be used for STA. If you're unsure, your Support Coordinator or GenCare can help you check. If STA isn't currently funded, we can help you build a case for the NDIA.
Support Coordinators can refer participants via our online referral form at /make-a-referral, by calling 1300-247-788 or by emailing our coordination team. We aim to respond to all STA referrals within 1 business day and can discuss availability, participant fit and NDIS funding directly with the coordinator.
STA (Short-Term Accommodation) is for short respite stays of 1–14 nights per block, used multiple times per year. MTA (Medium-Term Accommodation) is for longer transitional stays of up to 90 days, used when a participant is waiting for a long-term SIL or SDA placement. If you need a short break or regular respite, STA is the right support. If you need a bridge while a permanent home is arranged, MTA is more appropriate.
