Who recovery coaching is for

Coaching that walks alongside recovery

For Participants
Recovery is a journey. We walk it with you.

Psychosocial Recovery Coaching is about building a life that is meaningful to you — not just managing symptoms. Your Recovery Coach works alongside you, helping you build skills, navigate the NDIS, connect with community and move forward at your own pace.

For Families & Carers
Support that complements — not replaces — your care.

Recovery coaching works alongside family support, not instead of it. Your family member's coach focuses on the NDIS navigation, skill building and goal work — while you focus on the relationship. Families tell us coaching reduces the pressure on them significantly.

What recovery coaching covers

Building skills, stability and connection

Starting point
Recovery Goal Setting

Working with you to identify what a meaningful, fulfilling life looks like — and building a practical plan to move toward it, one step at a time.

NDIS Plan Navigation

Helping you understand your NDIS plan, use your funding effectively, connect with the right providers and prepare for plan reviews with strong evidence of progress.

Daily Living & Independence Skills

Building the practical skills for daily life — routines, self-care, budgeting, cooking, transport and managing appointments independently.

Community Connection

Identifying and connecting with community activities, social groups, volunteering and peer support networks that align with your interests and recovery goals.

Crisis Prevention Planning

Developing personalised early warning signs, coping strategies and a clear plan for managing difficult periods — reducing hospitalisation and crisis escalation.

Employment & Education Pathways

Supporting participants who want to move toward study, training or employment — building confidence, skills and connections to make that next step achievable.

For Families & Carers

A coach who does the hard work alongside your family member.

Families of people with psychosocial disability often carry enormous weight — navigating the mental health system, the NDIS, the day-to-day crises and the long-term uncertainty. A Recovery Coach takes on much of that direct support work — the goal setting, the skill building, the provider navigation — so that you can be a family member again, not just a case manager.

Psychosocial Recovery Coaching

I had been through the mental health system for years and felt like no one actually believed I could get better. My Recovery Coach from GenCare was different from the first meeting — she asked me what I wanted my life to look like, not what my diagnosis was. Twelve months later I am volunteering twice a week, I have my own flat and I am preparing to go back to TAFE. Recovery coaching genuinely changed my life.

FAQs

Recovery coaching questions answered

Covering eligibility, what coaching involves, how it differs from clinical support and how to get started.

Psychosocial Recovery Coaching is an NDIS Capacity Building support for people with psychosocial disability — disability arising from a mental health condition. A Recovery Coach works with participants to build skills, set recovery goals, navigate the NDIS and build a life that is meaningful to them. It is funded under the Capacity Building — Support in Employment and Community category.
Psychosocial Recovery Coaching is available to NDIS participants whose primary disability is psychosocial — arising from conditions such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, anxiety disorders, PTSD or other mental health conditions. It must be included as a funded support in your NDIS plan.
Support Coordination focuses on helping you use your NDIS plan, connect with providers and coordinate your supports. Recovery Coaching is more intensive and personal — a Recovery Coach works alongside you in your daily life, building skills, working toward recovery goals and supporting your wellbeing and independence. Many participants have both.
A Recovery Coach is not a mental health clinician — they do not provide therapy or clinical treatment. They work alongside your treating team (psychiatrist, psychologist, GP) to support your recovery in daily life — implementing coping strategies, building routines, navigating the NDIS and connecting with community. Coaching complements clinical treatment; it does not replace it.
Session frequency depends on your NDIS funding and your current needs. Most participants meet with their Recovery Coach weekly or fortnightly. During periods of higher need — transitioning from hospital, navigating a crisis — more frequent contact may be arranged. Your coach is also available by phone between sessions.
Yes. Hospital discharge is one of the most critical transition periods for people with psychosocial disability. A Recovery Coach can help you re-establish routines, connect with community services, navigate the NDIS and implement a post-discharge support plan — significantly reducing the risk of readmission.
GenCare values lived experience as a strength in recovery coaching. We work with coaches who bring both professional training and personal understanding of the recovery journey. Ask about this when you enquire and we will match you with a coach whose background fits your situation.
Yes. Employment and education are common recovery goals. Your Recovery Coach can help you explore what kind of work or study interests you, build the skills and confidence needed, connect with supported employment services and work through the practical barriers that make employment feel out of reach.
GenCare Psychosocial Recovery Coaching is available across Melbourne and Sydney, with phone and telehealth sessions available for participants in other locations. Call 1300-247-788 to confirm availability in your area.
Support Coordinators can refer participants via our referral form at /make-a-referral or by calling 1300-247-788. We respond within 1 business day. Please include the participant's primary diagnosis, current living situation, NDIS goals and any immediate concerns or priorities for coaching.
