Our Focus

“More than outings — we help participants build real life skills and feel genuinely part of their community.”

What you can do

Your interests. Your community.

Community Participation support is flexible — activities are chosen around what matters to you, not a program applied to everyone.

Sports & fitness

Gyms, swimming pools, sporting clubs, parks and recreational activities — support to be active and part of a team in ways that suit you.

Arts & creativity

Art classes, music, theatre, craft groups and creative workshops — support to explore what you enjoy and express yourself in your community.

Education & learning

TAFE, adult learning courses, community education programs — support to attend, participate and build skills in a structured learning environment.

Shopping & daily living

Grocery shopping, banking, appointments and everyday errands — support to manage real-life tasks in the community with growing independence.

Volunteering & employment

Exploring volunteer roles, supported work placements or employment pathways — building purpose, routine and workplace confidence step by step.

Social groups & community events

Community festivals, cafes, movies, dining out, local events — support to take part in the social life you want and build friendships that last.

More than outings

Real skills built through real experiences

GenCare support workers don't just accompany participants — they actively teach and develop skills that carry over into everyday life.

Confidence in public settings

Moving through the world with confidence — navigating new places, meeting new people and handling the unexpected.

Communication & social skills

Starting conversations, building friendships, reading social cues — real skills developed through real experiences in the community.

Travel training & independence

Learning to use public transport, navigate familiar routes and travel independently — a skill that opens up everything else.

Decision-making & self-advocacy

Choosing activities, expressing preferences, speaking up for yourself — supported practice in making decisions builds lasting independence.

Friendships & social connection

Making real friends, not just acquaintances — support workers actively help participants build and maintain meaningful social connections.

Employment & volunteering pathways

For participants with work or volunteering goals, CP support can include workplace preparation, role exploration and building vocational confidence.

Community Participation

My daughter had never been on public transport alone. After six months with GenCare, she catches the bus to her art class every week by herself. The worker didn't just take her — she actually taught her. That's the difference.

Common questions

NDIS Community Participation explained

Everything you need to know about NDIS social and community participation support — answered simply.

Community Participation (formally known as Assistance with Social, Economic and Community Participation) is an NDIS Core Support that funds a support worker to help participants access and engage in community life. Under the National Disability Insurance Scheme, it covers activities like social events, education, sport, shopping, volunteering and more — with a focus on building skills, confidence and genuine social connection.
Community Participation is funded under Core Supports in your NDIS plan, specifically under Assistance with Social, Economic and Community Participation. It can be used flexibly across a wide range of activities — there is no fixed list, as long as the support is connected to your NDIS goals. Your Support Coordinator or GenCare can help you understand how your budget can be used.
Community Participation support is flexible and built around your interests. Common activities include sports and fitness, arts and creative classes, education and TAFE, shopping and daily errands, volunteering and work placements, social groups, community events and travel training. If an activity connects to your NDIS goals, it's likely a valid use of your Community Participation funding.
Yes — developing social skills is one of the key purposes of NDIS Community Participation support. GenCare support workers actively help participants build communication skills, make and maintain friendships, navigate social settings with confidence and practise real-life interactions during every session. This applies to both children and adults with disability.
Both options are available through GenCare. One-on-one (1:1) support provides a focused, personalised experience where the session is entirely built around one participant. Small group Community Participation offers social connection and peer interaction alongside support — great for building friendships and group social skills. Many participants use both at different times.
Community Participation (under the National Disability Insurance Scheme) is broader than simple 'social support' — it includes education access, employment pathways, shopping and daily living tasks, as well as social activities. The goal is not just to attend activities but to build skills, independence and meaningful community connections. GenCare's approach focuses on outcomes, not hours.
Yes. Travel training — learning to use public transport, navigate routes and travel independently — is a common and valuable use of Community Participation funding. It is considered a life skill development activity under the National Disability Insurance Scheme and can be included in your support sessions as a specific goal.
Every Community Participation session with GenCare is designed to move participants toward greater independence. Workers actively teach decision-making, self-advocacy, travel skills and daily living tasks — rather than just doing things for participants. Over time, the aim is for participants to engage in more activities independently, with support gradually stepping back as confidence grows.
Support Coordinators can refer participants via our online referral form at /make-a-referral or by calling 1300-247-788. We respond to all referrals within 1 business day and can discuss participant goals, activity preferences and funding directly with the coordinator. We provide regular progress updates and goal documentation throughout the support.
Yes. GenCare supports both children and adults with disability through Community Participation programs. For younger participants, activities are age-appropriate and focused on social skills, peer connection and community engagement. For adults, we focus on social connection, independence goals, employment pathways and community access. Support is tailored to the individual regardless of age.
